chapter 01

The first sparkle

before the light there was a small yellow +.

In the time before time bothered to keep track, the water was black all the way down and all the way up. There was no floor. There was no ceiling. There was only pressure, and something small living inside it.

That something was Cloro. Cloro was not yet a name — names come later, when there is someone around to say them — but the shape was already there: eight slow arms, two round eyes the color of a coin held underwater, and a body that pulsed once every long, long while, as if remembering to breathe on behalf of the whole ocean.
